Researching into medicines and diseases is not only time consuming, but also time that mankind may just not have. It takes tens, if not hundreds of hours of study and resources just to develop the simplest of results and we generally rely on the medical "bodies" to come up with the answers for us, but here is where it changes...

A few years ago, I looked into researching using my computer resources and came upon an organisation in the United States that will let you download a project that yet to be tested and results to be found, as it would take so much computer time, that it would just never be fulfilled. What was being offered at the time was to download to your personal computer, a project that your computer would examine and unscramble, then automatically return the result to the lab once complete and connected to the Internet. It would use your spare CPU at Idle and run in the background. At this time, the project available was SETI ... A radio recorded signal that recorded for Extra-terrestrial life in outer space. While some may be sceptical about that project, millions of dollars are spent in just that cause and I thought, well, if there was anything my computer could do, then ANY results would be a contribution... Anyway, at least if there was a result, then I would be famous as the person whose computer found LIFE! ... Onward...

Recently, I was informed by SETI @ home, that they had changed resources and other projects could be found in the matter of biological testing and climate change research. I swiftly took up this E-mail and found that, now changing to BOINC (Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing), I quickly downloaded some resources and set to get my computer researching:

• Rosetta: Cures for Human Diseases

• World Community Grid Agent: Knowledge of Human Diseases (My Project download is ... Cures research for AIDS)

• Climate Prediction: Study of Climate Changes

BOINC lets you donate computing power to scientific research projects such as:

• Climateprediction.net: study climate change

• http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/: search for gravitational signals emitted by pulsars

• http://predictor.scripps.edu/: investigate protein-related diseases

To participate in a project, download and run BOINC software, then enter the project's URL.

You can participate in more than one project, and you control the fraction of your computing power that goes to each project. If you participate in several projects, your computer will be kept busy even when one project has no work.
