Polperro

Arriving in the area several hours early than the book-in time for Seaview Holiday Village where I had arranged to take my parents (both pensioners but us all with challenged health conditions), it was decided to look around the area and stopped off into the village of Polperro which was only a couple of road miles from the site that we were due to book in and so parked in the main village car park which was more than adequate for the size of area, we headed down the winding, narrow street by foot, passing the stopping points for the tram-type (8-Seater milk float design) and horse-drawn services that offer to take you down this incline and back for a small fee, our eyes were opened to pocket sized cottages and shops, alongside some with streams breaching the narrow gaps that you could almost handshake across windows. If you are interested in Cornish Fudge, Pasties or Cream Teas (but then let’s face it, they are three of the many reasons that draws so many visitors to Cornwall), there are so many curious aromas you will smell, that you will not be able to help your self but to indulge in the scrumptious tummy-teasers. Leaving something to return to later in the week and after some rest, we started the walk back up to the top of the village to return to the car and move on nearer to the site we were to stay.

Returning later in the week for a more in depth view of this village locked back in history, we parked and walked down into the mainstream network of “shop-lets”, we were reassured that there were a number of adequate Lavatories for the emergency needs and a tidy selection of Restaurants and Café’s to choose from for the refreshments’ stops. Further down and the Sea having gone out a little, we noticed that there were steps leading down to a small stretch of sand area facing out to the mouth of the cove and walled high with Layers of Granite and Slate towering above us. To the right, were a couple of Cave entrances; that could not pass temptation but to investigate the nooks and crannies… it was an interesting experience, to imagine that not so long ago, this area would have been visited by smugglers and the like! It was not possible to miss out on multitudes of the photo opportunities, including the odd video shot, before making our way back up hill again.

Not being as fit as before, we decided to hop onto the float to return up near the car park (50p each person)… They appear to run up and down about every 10 minutes, so an impressive service, unfortunately, we missed out on the horse-drawn version (higher fee) but were just as relieved to know that it was so much easier than walking. Arriving near the top, we decided to pop into a restaurant up on the left hand corner (sorry, I cannot remember it’s name at the time of writing this), but no matter. The food was excellent and fully recommended, you are warned to mind the step as you walk in… very good… but it doesn’t say to watch your head at the same time! … As in most of these Olde Cottage Style buildings, the doorways are quite low, so watch out! …

Anyway, all done and dusted, Polperro was a most delightful addition to this expedition to Cornwall, but would have lasted longer, given the time to explore further. We did miss out on the Model Buildings and the Smuggler’s Museum; which I understand we must see if we return, but you would be advised that if you take the right hand branch at the bottom of the village to the Cove, it would appear that although you can see the Museum from there, quite close, you will need to walk back up to the branch in the village road and take the other fork to reach it. I would definitely go back again, but maybe when the weather is a little less wet and windy!
