Majorca: June 1999
Taking my first
Flight alone and travelling to Majorca on
“allocation on arrival” I was taken to Cala D’Or
and booked into Cala D’Or Park Gardens… This was
a very attractive interior with a double Pool
area, a very clean Restaurant and adequate
on-site shop, although located close to many
outside shops along the Hotel frontage. There is
a safety deposit box available, but it is not in
your accommodation… it is located in a separate
room tagged onto the Reception area.
There is a Bar
near to the poolside and always friendly staff
willing to assist you, complimented by nightly
entertainment package, made this Hotel a
comfortable and relaxed environment to
experience.
The Beach area
was a very short walk down hill and a generous
sandy area and a beautiful blue and clear
sparkling Sea. All the areas were very well
maintained and so clean that puts many of the UK
streets to shame. Instead of walking down to the
beach, if you walk up and around to the left
with the Sea to your right, you will come across
more Holiday Complexes etc… keep on walking and
you will encounter beautiful whitewashed Villas
with gardens to dream of. I followed this route
many times, with Villas on either side of me I
came to a Cliff edge towering high over the Sea…
this was so breathtaking. Looking over to the
left, into the rocks, there were inlets to
cavernous gaps inside, then the suggestion of
another main inlet to another beach area further
on.
During this one
week stay, I did not worry about excursions too
much, but made sure that I booked up at least
one and what a fantastic one that was… A 4½-hour
Cabaret Show, including 4-course meal sat at
tables in a 2000 capacity audience at Son Amar;
hidden in the hillside and heavily guarded at
the gates. An 1½-hour coach trip to the other
side of the Island all enjoyed copious and
endless quantities of drinks which were included
and an outstanding professional performance by
multi-talented entertainers… Acrobatics;
Magician; Tribute Bands; Theatrical Shows and
never forgetting the Laser Shows throughout and
the magical Laser show in the canopy area
outside on the way back to the Coach after main
show’s end… yes, so magical, standing packed
like sardines, under this electric fusion of
lights and images flying over your head…
mind-blowing! … Worth going back to Majorca for
that alone!
During the
daytime, when I had recovered from the
night-time liquid indulgence, I ventured out to
the local streets firstly to the right, coming
out of the Hotel entrance and within five
minutes, came upon a large area where there were
large Pubs and shops flanking both sides of the
street, with something going on all the time. I
recall an area that was dedicated to children’s
play entertainment and found this area well
equipped. It was nice to return a stroll down
this street on a number of occasions during this
stay.
Coming out of the
Hotel entrance, down the hill and anchoring to
the right, keep on going for about ½ mile and
you will find the main Cala D’Or Marina. Here is
an array of vessels, many of them valued in
their Millions plus all sorts luxury
water-sports craft that leaves you an
inspiration for the that time when your dreams
may come true. There is also a promenade of
shops that contain well-equipped restaurants and
cafés. I did venture back three times during my
stay.
Walking over to
the area that faces directly from the front of
the Hotel, weaving through side streets, I was
astonished to find a network of Restaurants,
yes, just Restaurants! There was a grid of
streets and all of them with rope-like dividers
into the pavements and a Waiter standing at
each, to encourage you to taste their cuisine. I
could not believe it, everywhere I turned, and
it was door-to-door food, without a single
break. Returning to this area, I tried to count
them and stopped at 100, I am positive that I
had not repeated any and there was more to go! The week having been completed and in conclusion, I can honestly say, I would like to return and stay for at least 2 weeks, go back to Son Amar and explore the Island as full as possible.
