What is a Cochlear Implant? ... A Cochlear implant is a very sophisticated form of hearing aid. Rather than amplifying sounds, it works by stimulating the hearing nerve electrically. It does not restore the "normal" hearing but, used well, it can improve awareness of environmental sounds, enhance lip reading and help some users follow speech without lip reading. The implant itself consists of a receiver which is surgically placed in the bone behind the ear, and a series of tiny wires placed within the Cochlea. An externally worn, removable microphone picks up sounds which pass through a wire to a compact speech processor. This selects the sounds most useful for understanding speech and sends them to a transmitter. This in turn sends the signal across the skin to the implanted receiver.
